The Evolution of Produce Traceability Labeling

Produce Traceability Barcoding

Produce traceability has evolved significantly over the years, driven by the need for greater transparency, efficiency, and food safety. One of the most critical elements in this has been the advancement of produce labeling, mainly through the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) efforts. Let’s explore how labeling has evolved to enhance traceability in the produce industry.

Early Days: Simple Labels with Limited Information

Before the PTI, the produce industry relied on simple handwritten or printed pallet labels. These labels included basic information such as pallet ID, commodity, variety, and pack style. However, no standardized system was in place, which meant that different companies could use different identifiers for the same product, leading to inconsistencies and challenges in tracking produce throughout the supply chain.

Introduction of Barcode Labels: A Game Changer

The PTI revolutionized traceability by introducing barcode labels that encoded essential information in a machine-readable format. These barcodes included the brand owner’s prefix, Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), and pack lot numbers, allowing for more precise tracking of produce from the packing location to retail outlets. Implementing case-level labeling meant that individual cases could be traced back to their origin, significantly improving the ability to monitor and recall products when necessary.

The PTI also introduced the Voice Pick Code, which was especially useful for distribution centers relying on voice-based picking systems. This code facilitated the efficient picking and tracking of produce, further enhancing the traceability process.

Pallet-Level Tracking: The Hybrid Pallet Label

As the industry recognized the need for even more detailed tracking, pallet-level labels were introduced. The Hybrid Pallet Label (HPL) was developed to encode information about all the cases on a pallet, including the GTIN, pack lot or batch numbers, and the Serialized Shipping Container Code (SSCC). This innovation allowed for the efficient scanning of entire pallets without breaking them down, streamlining operations in distribution centers.

Although the HPL was a significant step forward, most retailers today have moved towards using the SSCC on pallet tags in conjunction with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems, enabling the automatic identification of pallet contents with a single scan.

The Harmonized Case Label: Standardization Across the Industry

A significant milestone in produce labeling came in March 2021 with adopting the Harmonized Case Label. This update was crucial in establishing a consistent, industry-wide standard for case-level labeling. Before this, different retailers and food service companies often required unique label formats, leading to inefficiencies and the need for re-labeling products.

The Harmonized Case Label eliminated these discrepancies by providing a uniform format accepted by all major retailers and food service companies. This advancement streamlined operations and ensured that traceability data was consistent across the supply chain, making it easier to track produce from farm to fork.

The Future of Produce Traceability

As traceability continues to evolve, the produce industry continually explores new technologies to enhance labeling and tracking. For example, work is underway to develop a GS1-approved two-dimensional code that could replace traditional barcodes, offering even more data in a compact format.

The evolution of produce labeling, from simple handwritten labels to sophisticated, standardized barcodes, underscores the industry’s commitment to improving traceability. These advancements enhance food safety and bring greater efficiency to the supply chain, benefiting everyone from growers to consumers.
